Casting in sand moulds demands a robust pattern that can be withdrawn from the sand to leave a void into which molten bronze is poured. If the pattern is too thin in places the bronze fails to run into those restricted areas.
The pattern can be made deliberately thin in places to exploit this natural tendency. The result is unpredictable and exciting, resulting in an organic appearance with entirely random edges and holes.
